Madeline Gangnes, Ph.D.
EXCELLENCE IN INTEGRATING SUSTAINABILITY INTO THE CURRICULUM
This award recognizes the efforts of faculty who strive for excellence in teaching about sustainability and who make extraordinary efforts to introduce that essential concept into the curriculum. The award is given to a faculty member who is actively engaged in developing, promoting, and strengthening curricula that ensure that when students leave the 91大神, they will possess the awareness, competence, skills, and insights to appreciate and/or advance sustainability in a local and global context. This year’s recipient of the Sustainability Award is Dr. Madeline Gangnes.
Dr. Gangnes joined the University in 2020 and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Theatre. Madeline earned her Ph.D. from the University of Florida and came to the University in the midst of the pandemic. She has been actively involved on the critical topic of the environment, most notably in the area of climate change. As a nominator for this award noted, “When the University began its Laudato Si’ initiative, her efforts and dedication in fulfilling the goal of “caring for our common home” in the Society of Jesus’s Universal Apostolic Preferences has taken on new strength and significance which Madeline has demonstrated through her scholarship, teaching, and service.”
In the area of scholarship, Dr. Gangnes recently presented a conference paper entitled, “Teaching Literature of the Environment at a Jesuit Institution” at the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment Conference. Her scholarly work actively supports her teaching as demonstrated by two courses that she has developed: ENLT 124: Literature and the Environment and ENLT 324: Climate Fiction. Both of these courses support the newly revise Environmental Science major and the Environmental &Sustainability Studies Concentration.
In the area of service, Madeline is a member of the University’s Ecological Education working group and the Cry for the Poor working group, both of which support the Laudato Si’ initiative.
